Release Date: March 11, 2015
Synopsis
Pepper
Ryan grew up the troublesome, spoiled child of a rock god. With her
less-than-stellar parentage, and the bipolar disorder that has plagued her
existence, to say this little firecracker is a handful would be the
understatement of the century.
Sammy Belle
spent more than half his life saving Pepper. He’d been her strength, her
sanity, and the protective brotherly figure she never wanted to have.
They were never meant to be
together.
They gave in anyway.
And
just when Sammy thought he had everything he wanted, Pepper ran.
Now
twenty-three, Pepper returns to Sugartown, a failed tattoo artist with one too
many screws loose who’s down on her luck, wielding an ice cream van as beaten
up as her heart.
Sugartown’s
most coveted bachelor has always been content with the quiet life he leads
until Pepper, the hellion from his past, returns to test his strength, his
patience, and perhaps even his sanity. But two can play at that game, and
Pepper is about to learn that Sam can give as good as he gets.
Can
this good country boy survive Pepper’s cruel city world, or will the whole
thing be put down to a bout of temporary insanity?
One
thing is for certain:
He’s crazy about her.
She’s just crazy.
Warning: Intended for an
18+ audience. Contains sexual content, oodles of profanity, a firefighter so
hot you may need a very cold shower, and one pink-haired crazy Harajuku girl.
Our Review
Finding the right words to do this book justice was a very hard task. It took us ages to even begin this review. Our eyes are burning with the pain from all the tears we cried reading this masterpiece by Carmen. Five stars doesn’t even come close to rating this book how high we want to. Much like the previous books in the Sugartown series this book is filled with our favorite characters that we are going to miss so much.
Pepper Ryan and Sammy Belle have always been there for eachother. Since the day she was born, Sammy, much older than her, became her protector. Growing up their bond became stronger, and soon their feelings became more than just friendship. Most saying their bond was more one of a brother and sister than just friends. Their almost taboo love for eachother causes some moral strains. But when Pepper feels she is old enough and acts on these feelings she has for Sam, it doesn’t go the way she plans. Rejection hurts, and rebelling against everything is the way she feels is best to cope with this.
Over time, and as they get older, their feelings are still simmering under the surface, both trying to fight it is a lost cause, and after finally showing their true feelings, Pepper runs, leaving Sammy a mess, and for the next 5 years, he lives his life, not really living, just getting by, so when Pepper comes barrelling back into town, she’s about to turn things around in more ways than Sam expected.
“I close my eyes. I cant look at her right now. If i do I’ll give in again, and she will see how weak I am. She’ll see that despite all the time that’s passed, she still owns me. And I can’t let her know that, because even though I’ve told myself these last few years that I don’t, a part of me still loves her. And I can’t watch her run again.”
Hiding from her demons and her past, Pepper has baggage, and plenty of it. But the one thing that she can’t hide are her feelings for Sam. He knows her demons, her bi-polar, her cutting he’s been a witness to it his whole life. He knows he can be her everything if she would just let him. But Pepper’s firecracker attitude and tough exterior are no match for the love that Sam feels towards her. But when Sam sees her life spiraling out of control he does the one thing he promised her he wouldn’t do. Will his betrayal cost them their love? Their relationship?
“I’m Satisfied with the bombshell I see staring back, but my reflection can’t hide the girl inside me thats screaming to get out. She never really goes away. The drugs keep her safely locked in her cage, but sometimes, when my head is quiet, I can hear her silent screams again, and I feel the sharp bite of pain in her body as she thrashes in her pretty prison.”
Kayla- The sadness I felt in this book was so raw and real. I felt like I was Pepper, going through the pain she did. The emotions Carmen draws out, the deepness in which she displayed Pepper was a true testament to the brilliant writer she is. Her writing has evolved so much since she first started this series and I am so sad to see this series end, but seeing the words and feelings she is capable of evoking I can only imagine how much more magic we can expect to see from her.
Kristy - Carmen's portrayal of Pepper, her illness, her feelings, thoughts and inner demons were so in depth and so very true to someone like Pepper. I struggled to read this book and many a times sent Kayla messages telling her I didn't think I could finish it. As hard as it was to continue, reading Carmen's writing is what kept me going. I can't find the words to express just how amazing this book really is. Carmen's writing has gone from strength to strength and she never ceases to amaze me. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.
